בלי טלוויזיה בסלון

בהרבה מאוד בתים בעולם הטלוויזיה ממוקמת במרכז הבית.

בישראל היתה לנו טלוויזיה בסלון. כל הישיבה היתה מסודרת ככה שמכל מקום יהיה נח לצפות בטלוויזיה. ככה זה . אפילו לא חשבתי אחרת.

והטלוויזיה היתה דלוקה מלא שעות ביום. אחרי הצהריים הילדים ובערב המבוגרים.

ובאופן כללי היא דולקת.

שהגענו לכאן אחד הדברים הראשונים שקנינו היה טלוויזיה. מסך גדול חדיש חדש לתפארה.

נשאנו אותה על כפיים הביתה כמו כלה, ונתקלנו בבעיה. לא היה שום קיר מתאים בסלון.

בצד אחד חלון, בצד שני דלת, באמצע החדר היה ממוקם קמין עצים, ובקיר היחידי שנותר עמד פסנתר כנף.....אויי ואבויייי 😱איפה נשים את הטלוויזיה???

היינו במשבר..... מי בונה ככה בית???🤔

היה לנו חדר נוסף שמיועד לאורחים. שמנו בו ספה מפנקת ואת הטלוויזיה. הפכנו אותו לחדר טלוויזיה.

ואז התגלה משהו נפלא 👀 התחלתי לצפות בטלוויזיה רק מתי שרציתי. לא מתי שרוני רצה, לא מתי שלואי, הנכד הקטן רצה, רק כשאני באמת רציתי. הפלא ופלא כמעט ולא רציתי....

הסלון נשאר מרחב נטרלי לכל עיסוק אחר למעט טלוויזיה. עשינו שם ערבי נגינה וארוחות ערב רבות משתתפים.

הטלוויזיה נדחקה לחדר שלה , "חדר טלוויזיה" והפסיקה להשתלט על המרחב הציבורי.

לימים עברנו לבית אחר, גדול ויפה עם סלון מרהיב ותקרה גבוהה.

פרצתי בצחוק כשהבנתי שגם הבית הזה נבנה ללא התיחסות לטלוויזיה בסלון.

לא היה שום קיר, שום סידור ישיבה שתומך בצפיה בטלוויזיה.

איזה הקלה!!! אין מצב לשים את הטלוויזיה בסלון. כל כך שמחתי.

שוב בחרנו פינה קטנה ואינטימית בקומה השניה, שמנו את הספה הנוחה שלנו והעפנו את הטלוויזיה לפינת הטלוויזיה.

כשאנחנו מארחים אנחנו יושבים במעגל. מסתכלים אחד על השני. מדברים צוחקים, ומקשיבים למוזיקה ושותים יין. בחורף האח הוא הטלוויזיה שלנו. מהפנט לשבת מול האש להביט בלהבות, להתחמם.

מפה לשם חשבתי שאני כבר מכירה פה את רוב האנשים ואורח חייהם, אבל הופתעתי לפגוש אדם בשנות ה 70 שעובד נורמטיבי בחנות מקומית. הוא סיפר לי שהוא גר בהרים ודרך עפר מובילה אליו. בחורף כשיורד שלג הוא מחנה את המכונית שלו למרגלות ההר ועולה ברגל לבית כדי שלא יתקע עם הרכב על ההר ויוכל בבוקר לסוע לעבודה.

"אבל אני לא מודאג מהפסקות חשמל" הוא אמר לי "כי אני לא מחובר לחשמל". "אהה יש לך פאנלים סולאריים?" שאלתי

"לא" הוא אמר.

"אז איך אתה מאיר?" התפלאתי,

"עם נרות" הוא ענה. "וכשהערב יורד אני פשוט הולך לישון"....

באמת פשוט...הסקתי מזה שאין לו לבטים איפה למקם את הטלוויזיה.😉

Without a TV in the Living Room

In many homes around the world, the television is placed at the center of the house.

In Israel, we had a TV in the living room. All the seating was arranged so that from every spot it would be comfortable to watch. That’s how it was. I never even considered anything else.

And the television was on for many hours a day. In the afternoon the kids watched, and in the evening the adults.

In general, it was simply always on.

When we arrived here, one of the first things we bought was a television. A large, modern, magnificent screen.

We carried it home in our arms like a bride, and then ran into a problem. There wasn’t a single suitable wall in the living room.

On one side there was a window, on the other a door. In the middle of the room stood a wood-burning fireplace, and on the only remaining wall there was a grand piano… Oh no 😱 Where would we put the TV???

We were in a "crisis"… Who builds a house like that? 🤔

We had an extra room meant for guests. We put a cozy sofa in it along with the television and turned it into a TV room.

And then something wonderful happened,

I started watching TV only when I wanted to. Not when Roni wanted to, not when Loui, my little grandson, wanted to, only when I truly wanted to. And surprisingly, I hardly ever wanted to…

The living room remained a neutral space for everything except television.

We held music evenings there and many large dinner gatherings.

The TV was pushed into its own room, the “TV room”, and stopped dominating the public space.

Later on, we moved to another house, bigger and beautiful, with a magnificent living room and high ceilings.

I burst out laughing when I realized that this house, too, had been built with no consideration for a television in the living room.

There wasn’t a single wall, not a single seating arrangement that supported TV watching.

What a relief!!! No way to put the TV in the living room. I was so happy.

Again, we chose a small and intimate corner upstairs, placed our comfortable sofa there, and moved the TV into its own little nook.

When we host, we sit in a circle. We look at one another. We talk, laugh, listen to music, and drink wine. In the winter, the fireplace is our television. It’s mesmerizing to sit by the fire, watch the flames, and warm up.

One way or another, I thought I already knew most people here and their lifestyles, but I was surprised to meet a man in his 70s who works a regular job at a local store. He told me he lives up in the mountains, and a dirt road leads to his home. In winter, when it snows, he parks his car at the foot of the mountain and walks up to the house so he won’t get stuck up there, and so he can drive to work in the morning.

“But I’m not worried about power outages,” he told me, “because I’m not connected to electricity.”

“Oh, do you have solar panels?” I asked.

“No,” he said.

“Then how do you light your home?” I wondered.

“With candles,” he answered. “And when evening falls, I simply go to sleep.”

Truly simple… I concluded from that that he doesn’t struggle with the question of where to place the television. 😉
