בשנת 2024 כנגד כל הסיכויים הסיפרייה שלנו זכתה בתואר המאוד מכובד:

"הסיפרייה (הקטנה) הכי טובה באמריקה".

אנחנו משמיטים את המילה הקטנה, כי היא סתם מקטינה.... איך זה קורה שדוקא כאן, במקום כל כך מרוחק, שאין בו רשויות צומחת סיפרייה לתפארת?

אז ככה,

כשהסיפרייה הופכת להיות מרכז התרבות היחידי בעיירה כל הכח, האנרגיה והפעילות עוברים אליה.

מה שהתחיל כסיפרייה קהילתית די רגילה התפתח עם השנים למקום מגניב ממש.

את הסיפרייה הקימה קבוצת יזמים שנקראת "ידידיי הסיפרייה".

הילדים מרגישים בבית

אחד הדברים שהכי הרשימו אותי הוא שבתוך הסיפרייה הרגילה יש עוד סיפרייה קטנה - סיפריית זרעים🌱.

זרעים של ירקות, פרחים וצמחי מרפא שמתאימים לאקלים שלנו, נאספים כל שנה בקפידה ממויינים, נארזים ומתוייגים. הכל ע"י מתנדבים במספר אירועים שנתיים שנקראים "מסיבת עבודה".

כשהגעתי בפעם הראשונה למסיבת עבודה הפריע לי, כישראלית שפותחת שולחנות, שאין כיבוד...חחח...מה זה מסיבה בלי כיבוד? זה כאילו רק עבודה בלי המסיבה. לא ככה?

מה עם תה ועוגיות? שאלתי בזהירות.

ככה זה כשאת באה מתרבות אחרת.

אני מציעה קפה לאינסטלטור, סנדביץ לגנן, ואם השליח של UPS מגיע ביום של אפיה הוא יוצא מפה עם איזה עוגיה או מאפינס לדרך...

כאן אין את מנהג הכנסת האורחים הספונטנית של המזרח התיכון. כל אחד בא לפגישה עם תרמוס פרטי ואם אני מביאה כיבוד כולם מתלהבים "תודה על השיתוף הם אומרים" אבל בדרך כלל לא מאמצים מזה שום דבר לעתיד....

בהתחלה זה ממש חירפן אותי. אחר כך למדתי שזה עניין תרבותי ומי אמר שהתרבות שלנו יותר טובה?

חשבתי על זה לעומק. נסיתי בלי דעות קדומות ובלי שיפוטיות. הבנתי גם את היתרונות "בשיטה האמריקאית" אבל....

כשארחתי את קבוצת היוגה אצלי בבית, מראש אמרתי לרוני "אני לא מגישה כלום!!!! שכל אחד יבוא עם הבקבוק מים שלו. כשאתה ברומא התנהג כרומאי". נפנפתי בידיי והייתי נחושה.

רבע שעה לפני שהקבוצה התכנסה הכנתי מהר קנקן תה צמחים ועוגיות, בקטנה. אפשר להוציא את הישראלי מישראל אבל אי אפשר להוציא את ישראל מהישראלי....

וואוו איך שהם התלהבו: "תודה על השיתוף " אמרו כולם...

"נו באמת" חשבתי לעצמי....

בחזרה ל"מסיבת עבודה". להבדיל מבדרך כלל כשבאתי בפעם הבאה להתנדב חיכה לנו מגש יפה עם מגוון עוגיות ותה.

סיפריית הזרעים היא

דבר יוצא מן הכלל והיא חינמית לחלוטין !!!אתה יכול לבוא מתי שאתה רוצה לקחת כמה שאתה רוצה. בנוסף האחראית על סיפריית הזרעים מארגנת מפגשים עם חקלאים עתירי ידע וסדנאות שתילה.

ב 2020 כשהעולם ננעל, הרבה אנשים חששו מהעתיד הכלכלי, ידענו פה בעמק הקטן, שהרע לא כזה רע. כל אחד יכול היה להתחיל ללא עלות גן ירק, לגדל לעצמו את הירקות, להקים לול תרנגולות ולקטוף פירות בשפע. רעבים לא נהייה. זאת הרגשה מרגיעה ומעצימה.

במתחם הסיפרייה יש אולם אירועים קטן ופעם בחודש מקרינים סרט וכל שלושה חודשים יש תערוכת אומנות מתחלפת של התושבים.

בית קפה חמוד במתחם הסיפרייה מגיש ארוחות בוקר וצהריים.

פעם בחודש מתקיים ערב ג'ם מוסיקלי שקוראים לו "מיקרופון פתוח".

גם זה דבר שלקח לי זמן להתרגל אליו. ....כולם נראו לי טיפוסים מוזרים, אשכרה לא ידעתי מי בסרט אני או הם.... אחר כך כשהתחלתי להכיר את הנפשות הפועלות ראיתי את החן שבזה. את האפשרות שניתנת לכל אחד שחולם על במה.... את המקום הקהילתי הבטוח שבו נותנים לך לנסות ולטעות, לעשות פאדיחות והכל טוב...

בצמוד לסיפרייה יש מבנה קטן הוא תחנת הרדיו המקומית אם אתה רוצה לקבל רצועת שידור שבועית, היידה. תבוא עם המוסיקה שלך או נושאי הדיון שלך ויש לך במה.

Dance as if no one is watching.

In 2024, against all odds, our library won the very prestigious title: "The Best (Little) Library in America." We’re leaving out the word "little"—because it just makes it sound small...

So how does it happen that here, in such a remote place, with no local authorities, a flourishing library springs up?

Well, when the library becomes the only cultural center in town, all the energy, power, and activity flows into it. What started as a pretty ordinary community library has evolved over the years into a super cool place. The library was founded by a group of entrepreneurs called “The Friends of the Library.”

One of the things that impressed me the most is that inside the regular library, there’s another small library—a Seed Library. Seeds of vegetables, flowers, and medicinal herbs suited to our climate are carefully collected each year, sorted, packed, and labeled. All done by volunteers during a few annual events called "Work Parties."

When I first came to a Work Party, it bothered me—as an Israeli who’s used to hosting lavish spreads—that there were no refreshments… haha...What kind of party is it with no snacks? It's like just work, without the party. Right? “What about tea and cookies?” I asked cautiously.

That’s what it’s like when you come from a different culture. I offer coffee to the plumber, a sandwich to the gardener, and if the UPS guy shows up on baking day—he leaves here with a cookie or muffin for the road...

Here, the spontaneous hospitality we know from the Middle East doesn’t really exist. Everyone shows up to meetings with their own water bottle. if I do bring treats, they get all excited and say, “Thanks for sharing,” but usually don’t adopt the practice for next time...

At first, it drove me crazy. Then I realized—it’s a cultural thing. And who says our culture is better?

I gave it some deep thought. Tried to look at it without judgment or bias. I even saw the advantages of “the American way.” But...

When I hosted my yoga group at home, I told Roni ahead of time:“I’m not serving anything!!! Everyone should bring their own water bottle. When in Rome,.....”

I waved my hands with determination.

Fifteen minutes before the group arrived, I quickly brewed a pot of herbal tea and brought out some cookies. Just a little something.

You can take the Israeli out of Israel, but you can’t take Israel out of the Israeli…

Wow, were they excited: “Thanks for sharing,” everyone said...

Back to the Work Party—The next time I came to volunteer, unlike before, there was a nice tray waiting for us with a variety of cookies and tea.

I loved it.

The Seed Library is something truly special, and it’s completely free!!!You can come whenever you want and take as many seeds as you need .In addition, the lady in charge organizes meetups with knowledgeable farmers and planting workshops.

In 2020, when the world shut down and many people feared for their economic future,here in our little valley, we knew things weren’t so bad.Anyone could start a veggie garden at no cost, raise chickens, and pick fruit in abundance.We weren’t going to go hungry. That’s a calming and empowering feeling.

On the library commons, there’s a small event hall. Once a month, they screen a movie, and every three months there’s a rotating art exhibit by local residents.

There’s a cute café serving breakfast and lunch. Once a month, there’s a music jam night called “Open Mic.” That, too, took me time to get used to…Everyone seemed so different to me, I seriously didn’t know who was in a movie—me or them...

Later, as I got to know the people involved, I saw the charm in it.The chance for anyone with a dream of performing to get on stage...A safe community space where you’re allowed to try, make mistakes, try agine, and it’s all okay... safe zone.

Right next to the library, there’s a small building that houses the local radio station.If you want a weekly broadcast slot—go for it! You can get a platform.

There are also parties, festivals, and other wonders...

We celebrated the award with a big party—everyone brought a dish—and music, of course. And we fully embraced Mark Twain’s philosophy:

We sang as if no one was listening.

We danced as if no one was watching.

We loved as if we had never been hurt.

We lived as if this was heaven on earth.
