Long Live The Queen .

שנה לפני שעברנו לקליפורניה החלטתי שאני צריכה עוד מיומנות שתהיה לי בכיס. נרשמתי לקורס דבוראות.

במשך שנה הגעתי למושב עדנים למשק של עזריה לופו, מושבניק מחוספס, חביב ועתיר ידע . למדתי על המבנה ההיררכי של הכוורת. בעצם בכוורת (מלבד כמה זכרים מטומבלים) כולן נקבות, אחיות, בנות של אותה המלכה האם . מלכת הדבורים מטילה 2000 ביצים ביום ובלעדיה אי אפשר!!!! אם קורה לה משהו צריך "לעשות מלכה" חדשה, כי אם לא הכוורת מתחסלת.

למדתי על רדיה, צוף, האבקה, סוגי דבש שונים, מזיקים וטפילים.

כמה וכמה פעמים נעקצתי תמיד באשמתי, או בטיפשותי, או ביהירותי.

לדבר הזה קוראים "מלכון" והוא בעצם תא הטלה למלכת דבורים חדשה.

עברנו לקליפורניה וגרנו בבית קטן עם שטח אדמה עצום. מאוד רציתי להביא כוורת אבל זאת לא היתה העונה ולא יכולתי להשיג נחיל. אבל כנראה שהרצון שלי היה יותר חזק מעונות השנה✨✨✨

יום אחד התעוררתי לקול זמזום אדיר. נחיל דבורים ענק החליט להשתכן בקיר של המחסן. הן חדרו דרך חור קטן בקיר ונהרו באלפים פנימה. 🐝🐝🐝

נחיל דבורים מגיע להתנחלות חדשה

בהתחלה ניסיתי להוציא אותן מהקיר בכל מיני תחבולות, אבל ברגע שהמלכה היתה בפנים זה כבר היה קרב אבוד.

אז הן גרו בקיר וזמזמו במרץ נכנסות ויוצאות מהחור ואני דמיינתי לי שהקיר כולו מלא בדבש ושאם יום אחד יפרקו אותו ימצאו שם אוצר מתוק.

בנתיים פרצה שריפה ענקית ביערות שסביב העיירה. שריפה איומה שאי אפשר היה להשתלט עליה.

2500 כבאים אמיצים ונערצים הקימו מחנה בעיירה שלנו ויצאו בתורנות ללחום באש כדי לא לאפשר לה לרדת מההרים לריצפת העמק.

עשן סמיך כיסה את השמיים ואת אור השמש. עד כדי כך

שב- 12 בצהריים היה חושך כמו בלילה. הצרצרים התבלבלו והתחילו לצרצר, חיות שברחו מהשריפה ביערות ובהרים הגיעו לעמק וחיפשו מים.

היה אוגוסט תחזית מזג האויר אמרה 40 מעלות ושמש.

זה היה נכון לכל מה שקורה מעל לעשן.

מתחת לעשן היה ממש קר וחשוך. הטמפרטורה צנחה ל 10 מעלות והוצאנו שוב את שמיכות הפוך.

האוטו שלנו היה ארוז וחנה עם הפנים החוצה שנוכל להמלט במקרה הצורך.

כל יום בבוקר ובערב השריף עלה לשידור בתחנת הרדיו המקומית ועידכן על המצב. אפר נפל בפתיתים מהשמיים....זה היה קטסטרופה!

זאת לא שקיעה זאת שריפה....

ככה זה נראה במשך חודשיים. הכל אפור ואין פיסת שמיים

בהעדר השמש לא היו כמעט ציפורים והעגבניות לא הצליחו להבשיל ונשארו ירוקות.

השריפה נמשכה חודשיים!!!

שמתי לב פתאום שהדבורים לא יוצאות מהחור שבקיר. התחלתי לעקוב אחריהן וראיתי שאין כמעט פעילות. מידי פעם יצאו כמה דבורים ונראו מבולבלות ממש, עפות בזיג זגים, רפויות ושקטות. תבינו משהו - זאת העונה שהדבורים אוספות דבש לחורף. בכוורת יש 5000 או אפילו 10000 דבורים. פתאום ירד לי האסימון.... כשרודים דבש משתמשים בעשן. העשן גורם לדבורים לאבד את חוש הריח הן לא יכולות לעקוב אחרי הפורומון שמפרישה המלכה. הן הופכות פסיביות ומטושטשות. השריפה יצרה מצב כזה. הדבורים נשארו בתוך הקיר ואכלו את הדבש שהיה אמור להיות להן לחורף. בנוסף לא יצאו לאסוף עוד דבש וזה גזר דין מוות. התחלתי להגיש להן מי סוכר. אלפי דבורים זנקו מהחור שבקיר למאכלה שהשארתי להן . זה היה פשוט מחזה מטורף. אני עמדתי שם בתוך הזמזום הרועש מבסוטה על עצמי בעוד רוני המבועת הסתגר בבית עם הכלבה שלנו....

ביום אחד של גשם, בשלהי ספטמבר, השריפה הסתיימה. שוב ראינו כמה כח יש לטבע להשמיד ולרפא.

השמיים התבהרו והשמש חיממה את האדמה. כל כך התרגשתי לראות שמיים כחולים ולנשום אוויר נקי...

הדבורים יצאו מהקיר בסדר מופתי ועשו את מה שהן אמורות לעשות בספטמבר.

אנחנו עברנו לגור בבית אחר והשארנו את הדבורים בירושה לדייר הבא.

בבית החדש קניתי לי שתי כוורות. הזמנתי דבורים באמזון . השליח של UPS היה חשדן וקצת לחוץ כשהעביר לי תיבת עץ קטנה עם המלכה החדשה שלי ובנות הלוויה שלה שדאגו לה לאורך כל המסע.

שמתי כוורת אחת מתחת לעץ אגסים והשניה מתחת לעץ תפוחים. והן חיות באושר ועושר עד עצם היום הזה.

Long Live The Queen.

A year before we moved to California, I decided I needed another skill to keep in my back pocket. I signed up for a beekeeping course.

For a year, I traveled to Moshav Adanim to the farm of Azaria Lupo, a rugged, kind, and knowledgeable farmer .

I learned about the hierarchical structure of the hive. Actually, in a beehive (aside from a few males), everyone is female—sisters, daughters of the same queen mother. The queen bee lays 2,000 eggs a day, and without her—it's impossible!!! If something happens to her, a new queen must be “made,” because if not, the hive will perish.

I learned about honey extraction, nectar, pollination, different types of honey, pests, and parasites. I got stung several times—always my fault, either due to carelessness, stupidity, or arrogance.

We moved to California to a small town, we lived in a Small house with a huge plot of land. I really wanted to bring in a hive, but it wasn’t the right season, and I couldn’t get a swarm. But apparently, my desire was stronger than the seasons .One day, I woke up to a loud buzzing. A giant swarm of bees had decided to settle inside the wall of our shed. They entered through a small hole and swarmed inside by the thousands. At first, I tried all kinds of tricks to get them out, but once the queen was inside, it was a lost battle.

So they lived in the wall, buzzing energetically in and out of the hole, and I imagined the whole wall filled with honey, like some sweet hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.

Meanwhile, a massive wildfire broke out in the forests surrounding the town—an uncontrollable inferno. 2,500 brave and admirable firefighters set up camp in our town, rotating shifts to prevent the fire from descending from the mountains into the valley floor.

Thick smoke covered the skies and blocked the sun so completely that at noon it looked like night.The crickets were confused and started chirping, animals fled the forests and mountains into the valley looking for water.

It was August. The weather forecast said 40 degrees Celsius and sunny—but that was only true above the smoke. Below the smoke, it was cold and dark. The temperature dropped to 10 degrees, and we pulled out the down blankets again. Our car was packed and parked facing outward in case we needed to flee. Every morning and evening, the sheriff would go live on the local radio station to update us. Ash rained down like snowflakes... It was a catastrophe!

With no sun, there were almost no birds, and the tomatoes wouldn’t ripen—they stayed green.

The fire lasted two months!!!

One day, I suddenly noticed the bees weren’t coming out of the wall. I started watching and saw almost no activity. Now and then, a few bees came out, looking completely disoriented, flying in zigzags, sluggish and silent.

You need to understand something—this is the season when bees collect honey for winter. A hive has 5,000, even 10,000 bees. And then it hit me—when extracting honey, we use smoke. Smoke dulls the bees’ sense of smell, they can’t track the queen’s pheromones, and they become passive and disoriented. The wildfire had created that same condition.

The bees stayed in the wall and ate the honey they were supposed to save for winter.They also weren’t collecting new honey—which is a death sentence.

So I started feeding them sugar water. Thousands of bees leapt from the wall hole toward the food I left for them. It was absolutely insane to witness. I stood there in the loud buzzing, proud of myself, while Roni, terrified, locked himself inside with our dog.

Then one rainy day in late September—the fire was over. Again, we saw how nature can both destroy and heal.

The skies cleared and the sun warmed the earth. I was so moved to see blue sky again and breathe clean air…

The bees came out of the wall in perfect order and did what they were supposed to do in September.

We moved to a new house and left the bees as an inheritance to the next tenants.

In the new house, I bought two hives. I ordered bees from Amazon.The UPS driver looked suspicious and a bit stressed as he handed me a small wooden box with my new queen and her entourage, who cared for her the whole journey.

I placed one hive under a pear tree, and the other under an apple tree—and they’ve been living happily ever after.
